Γραμμές - Lines

Από παλιά, η πιο 
αντιπαθητική φράση
που θυμάμαι ήταν το 
«αν το θες μπορείς, 
στο χέρι σου είναι.»
Μεγαλώνοντας είδα 
ότι το μόνο ανεξίτηλο 
πράγμα στο χέρι μου
ήταν οι γραμμές του. 
Τόσα χρόνια ιδιες 
κι απαράλλαχτες,
αγέραστες, αγέλαστες
αγεωγράφητες. 
Τόσα χρόνια εκεί 
ουράνια τόξα τσέπης
υπό κατασκευή, 
έτσι γιά να έχω 
την ευφάνταστη 
προοπτική.
Να όμως που το έργο 
φοβάμαι παρατράβηξε 
και οσονούπω η σύμβαση
θα μου καταγγελθεί.

From my early days, 
the most obnoxious phrase
that I can remember is 
"Can do it if you want, 
it's in your hands."
Growing up I saw
that the only indelible
thing in my hand
were its lines.
So many years 
self-same 
and unchanged,
ageless, sullen
and uncharted.
So many years 
lying there like
pocket rainbows
under construction,
just to have
the imaginative
perspective.
But now the project
I fear has been overdone
and soon my contract
will be reported.
