Ronnie James Dio - R.I.P.

Σε ηλικία 67 ετών και λόγω σοβαρού προβλήματος υγείας, έφυγε από τη ζωή την Κυριακή 16 Μαΐου ο θρύλος του μέταλ, Ronnie James Dio. Ο τραγουδιστής που αντικατέστησε τον Ozzy Osbourne στους Black Sabbath έπασχε από καρκίνο του στομάχου, όπως είχε ανακοινωθεί το περασμένο καλοκαίρι και ακολουθούσε φαρμακευτική θεραπεία. Το πραγματικό του όνομα ήταν Ronald James Padanova και είχε γεννηθεί στο Portsmouth (Νew Hamshire) αλλά σε μικρή ηλικία η οικογένειά του μετακόμισε στο Κόρτλαντ της Νέας Υόρκης. Ο Dio ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του με τη μπάντα Elf που ο ίδιος δημιούργησε ενώ απέκτησε αναγνώριση το 1975 ως τραγουδιστής των Rainbow, του συγκροτήματος που ίδρυσε ο κιθαρίστας Ritchie Blackmore αφού αποχώρησε από τους Deep Purple. Λίγο αργότερα, το 1979 πήρε τη θέση του Ozzy Osbourne στους Black Sabbath και μαζί έβγαλαν το πολύ επιτυχημένο άλμπουμ «Heaven and Hell». Ο ένατος αυτός δίσκος του συγκροτήματος κατέλαβε μία θέση στο πάνθεον των κορυφαίων δίσκων του heavy metal. Η διχογνωμία ανάμεσα στους θαυμαστές της μουσικής των Black Sabbath ανάμεσα στον Dio & τον Osbourne για το ποιος από τους δύο τραγουδιστές εκπροσωπούσε καλύτερα το πνεύμα της μπάντας εξακολουθεί να υπάρχει μέχρι σήμερα.
Για μένα, είναι δύο εντελώς διαφορετικά πράγματα. Γιά μένα ο Ronnie, ήταν και θα είναι η φωνή της πρώτης περιόδου των Rainbow, ένα από τα πρώτα εφηβικά μου ακούσματα που έχουν ανεξίτηλα χαραχτεί στην καρδιά μου. Παραθέτω μία απο τις αγαπημένες μου μπαλάντες του Ronnie, με τίτλο "Children Of The Sea".
